Skomer Island

It’s true! The wildlife haven just off the beautiful Pembrokeshire coast was the only Welsh nature reserve nominated in this highly competitive category by LandLove Magazine Awards UK.

Are we surprised that it won? Not at all – for nature lovers, Skomer Island is a must: although it’s best known for the puffin colony, the reserve is also home to guillemots, razorbills, harbour porpoises and Atlantic grey seals. It also has the world’s largest population of manx shearwaters, but you’ll need to stay overnight to see those.

If you need proof of the incredible things you’ll see during your trip, the winning photograph in the ‘Nature’ category of National Geographic Traveller’s 2016 photography competition features a Skomer Island puffin on its way home from a hunting trip. Congratulations to David Godfrey for capturing this incredible image.

As if the pictures weren’t enough to encourage you to visit, during the spring, Skomer is covered in a carpet of bluebells, which changes to pink during the summer as swathes of Campion cloak the landscape. And you can either visit Skomer on a daytrip, or for the more adventurous, book an overnight stay in their accredited self-catering accommodation.
