New South Wales in Australia was treated to the southern hemisphere’s version of the Northern Lights called Auror Australis on Tuesday. The footage captured from Kiama shows a timelapse of the mystical colours beaming across the night sky.
The Aurora Australis is caused by plasma particles from the sun, part of the solar wind, which enter the atmosphere.
Collisions between the electrically charged particles and Earth’s magnetic field ionize oxygen and nitrogen atoms, releasing colourful light.
